Punta Tombo Natural Protected Area (terrestrial)

It is a Tourist Natural Reserve with a Specific Objective that covers 210 hectares of the Patagonian Steppe, located in the Florentino Ameghino Department, about 110 km from the city of Rawson

With a management category of National / Provincial Park, its conservation objectives include protecting one of the most diverse colonies of seabirds in Argentina and the largest continental colony of the Magellanic Penguin, with almost half a million individuals.

The objectives behind the creation of the Punta Tombo Natural Protected Area are the following:

  • Ensure the protection of the terrestrial, coastal and marine environments to preserve the natural and cultural resources of the area.
  • Conserve the population of Magellanic penguins, mainly promoting the protection of their breeding habitat.
  • Preserve the structural characteristics of the landscape to ensure the perpetuation of its scenic value.
  • Promote the development of tourist activity at a level that allows maintaining the attributes of the area for current and future generations.
  • Promote knowledge and value of the protected area, to promote respect for the attributes that justified its designation as such.
  • Encourage scientific research and monitoring of the area as the main activities associated with the sustainable management of resources.

Punta Tombo is a protected area for the conservation of its natural and cultural resources, particularly its important population of Magellanic penguins, in order to ensure benefits for present and future generations.

Tourism

The Reserve is open to visitors and on average it is stipulated that it receives visits from 87,600 people annually.
