CHARACTERISTICS
Trelew is the starting point of tourism in the region. Due to its strategic location, it facilitates the organization of visits to the different cultural and natural attractions of the region, head of the valley services, productive hub and urban center of cultural, educational and scientific activity in the region. In it, a social dynamic coexists harmoniously against ancestral traditions – buildings that reflect a mosaic of European styles and the imprint of the Welsh colony – whose old town shows a particular layout with characteristic “alleys” or “passages”.
The Welsh colonists, arrived in 1865, dominated the agricultural production of the valley with irrigation channels, taking advantage of the Chubut River. Today, the agrotourism invites to know the activities of the farms, the elaboration of artisan products (sweets, liqueurs, preserves, sausages and cheeses) and the history of the colonization of the valley. Its cultural tradition is part of the Trelewense identity: poetry, singing, music, gastronomy. The Celtic spirit is manifested in cultural events that transcend our borders, in unique products and in the particular religious architecture.
LOCATION
Trelew is located in the northwest of the Province of Chubut, in the Virch-Valdés region, conveniently close to the Atlantic coast, which favors easy access to the natural and cultural attractions of the region. The city had its origin in 1886 as a rail point of the railway line that began to be drawn between the Lower Valley of the Chubut River and Bahía Nueva, now Puerto Madryn. Its name in Welsh word that means “The Town of Luis” is in Homage to Lewis Jones, considered the founder of the city.
